Want to live to 100? Eat sea vegetables
You’ve probably heard the term ‘trace minerals’ but what are they and why are they so important to your health?
Let’s look at basic engine mechanics. Your car has spark plugs. Like trace minerals found in foods (or liquid drops in supplements), spark plugs are relatively small compared to the rest of your vehicle’s engine parts. They are also often not thought about that often compared to other essential car maintenance tasks such as changing the oil, filters or fan belts.
But without spark plugs, there is no life to the car. Spark plugs ignite fuel and create combustion. Likewise, without trace minerals--iron, copper, zinc, manganese, selenium, iodine, chromium, molybdenum--our cells wouldn’t wouldn’t receive the spark to communicate with each other to contract muscles or produce hormones or utilize vitamins.
Sea vegetables--chlorella and spirulina (algaes), dulse, kelp, nori, wakame--are especially high in trace minerals, often times more so than land vegetables. Health food stores and even big chain supermarkets sell sea vegetables (usually in the Asian food section).
Trace minerals also bind to toxins in our bodies and assist in their removal.
Most Americans and other westernized populations eat very little or no sea vegetables, save for the occasional seaweed at a sushi restaurant. Many Japanese, consume a handful of grams of sea vegetables every day, often eating them with every meal. The typical American breakfast of bacon, eggs and toast is deficient in trace minerals, but a traditional Japanese breakfast includes rice seasoned with seaweed, another trace mineral powerhouse sea vegetable.
Want to live to 100? Do like the Okinawans do
Researchers who study centenarian populations around the globe discovered a high percentage of residents on the Japanese island of Okinawa live well into their 100s. One factor for their longevity, the researchers believe, is the abundance of sea vegetables consumed in the traditional diet.
Perhaps you’ve heard of resveratrol and astaxanthin, two powerful antioxidants that have mass marketed in the supplement world. Seaweed contains its own mega-healthy element: fucoidan.
By the time you read this, fucoidan might very well be the supplement all-star du jour. While it’s debatable how effective some supplements are, there’s little arguing that when consumed from whole food sources like brown seaweed, which is very popular in southern Japan, an area of the globe with one of the lowest cancer and early mortality rates, fucoidans have been documented to kill viruses, lower cholesterol levels, prevent clotting and protect healthy cells.

It’s easy to add the healing powers of fucoidans to Miracle Noodle. Again, most health foods and even supermarkets these days sell Japanese sea vegetables like seaweed. Just make sure you add the seaweed at the very end of the cooking period so as not to kill all the trace minerals. Your cells and nerves will thank you for it!
