Can You Eat Bread if You're on a Low-Carb Diet?
Bread is usually one of the first things people give up when hopping on the low-carb bandwagon. But is it really necessary to entirely give it up?
The main reason most low-carb dieters ditch bread, of course, is because bread is usually high in carbs. Most conventional breads are made with enriched flour (read: white flour), which is stripped of the nutritious elements (fiber, for example) contained in wheat. The carbs in white-flour breads quickly convert into sugar. So there are two big strikes against most breads: they lack nutritious benefit and quickly convert into sugar, thus raising blood sugar levels and forcing the liver to store more unused energy as body fat.
But not all breads are created equally. If you were to stroll down the aisle of a major supermarket, 99% of the breads would be of the white flour variety. Health food stores and even some major food chains, though, also carry breads that are much healthier. Miracle Noodle usually does not recommend brand names (besides our own, of course!), but when it comes to bread, we do have a particular favorite. We also have a great new option when it comes to a zero net carb bread!
We'll tell you the new product in a little bit, but we also want to mention why we are fans of a particular brand and why we like it. There are 6 grams of fiber in one rectangle slice. That's a lot of fiber. Six grams is approximately one-quarter of the suggested daily value. So, you're getting 25% of your recommended fiber intake from just one slice! There's also 4 grams of protein, which is a fairly high amount for a relatively small piece of bread. You also get 15% of your daily iron intake. One slice only has 1 gram of fat. This one gram, combined with the fiber, will help you feel full. And there's only 115 calories in one slice.
If you're a low-carb dieter, you might be wondering how many grams of carbs there are. The answer: 23 While 23 grams of carbs might sound like a lot to someone who is severely restricting their carb intake (and if you are on a medically supervised ketogenic diet, take this recommendation with a grain of salt; check with your nutritionist or doctor), one slice is only about 8% of your recommended daily intake of carbs.
You probably won't consume the FDA's recommended intake of approximately 300 grams of carbs a day if you're a low-carb dieter, but this option the Miracle Noodle Team does make an exception for! It supplies long-lasting energy in the morning. Your brain functions on glucose. Carbs supply glucose to the brain. If you don't eat any carbs, there's a good chance your mental capabilities will suffer. While it's true that you might feel better ditching most garbage carbs like white bread, you do need at least a little bit of carbs to function.
There are many brands of nutritious, healthy, and even low-carb breads, but this is the one we recommend. It's called Mestemacher. It's old-world, German-style real rye, not fake molasses-colored rye. They use the whole kernel and whole rye flour, unlike the mass-producers of garbage enriched-flour bread.
Now for the great new product! We are pleased to offer a hamburger bun that is zero sugar, zero starch, and zero net carb. It’s called SmartBUN®! Smartbuns® are a delicious gluten-free hamburger bun that is high in protein, fiber, Omega-3’s and only 72 calories. Combining flax, egg whites and all natural non GMO ingredients you have a superfood that may reduce the risk of chronic diseases, help your digestion and strengthen your immune system!
So there you have it. A rare endorsement for bread and for another brand. However, bread is such a vital worldwide staple. Life is to be enjoyed. Unless you're on a medically-supervised diet and can't eat bread, live a little. Feed your brain with good energy in the morning.
